New coach of the Ghana national football team, Carlos Queiroz, is not earning the widely reported $100,000 monthly salary, according to new findings from local media reports.
The Ghana Football Association officially introduced the 73-year-old Portuguese coach on Thursday, 16 April, at the Alisa Hotel. He was confirmed as the new head coach of the senior national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz, an experienced manager who has previously coached Egypt, Iran and Portugal, has signed a short-term four-month contract.
He replaces Otto Addo, who was sacked in March after back-to-back defeats to the Austria national football team and the Germany national football team.
Earlier reports claimed that the former Manchester United assistant gaffer would earn $100,000 each month, but insiders have said that figure is not correct.
Officials say the Sports Minister, Kofi Adams, is expected to address the matter publicly and provide clarity on the coach’s actual salary.
Queiroz arrived with five members of his technical team and will start preparations with friendly matches against the Mexico next month. Ghana will then face Wales on 2 June as part of their build-up.
The Ghana national team will play in Group L at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Ghana will face the England, Croatia and Panama.
Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on 17 June, before playing England on 23 June and Croatia on 27 June.
After early exits at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, hopes are high for a better performance. Queiroz has been given the task of leading the four-time African champions past the group stage for the first time in more than ten years.
