Port City head coach Abdallah Brimah says players from Ghana’s local league can succeed at the highest level if they are given fair opportunities in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Brimah's comments come as there is ongoing debate about whether the Black Stars should use a quota system to include more Ghana Premier League players. The issue has been discussed on Channel One TV’s World Cup Central.

Speaking to Citi Sports on Saturday, 26 April 2026, Brimah said final player selection depends on the coach’s plan and style of play.

However, he believes the local league has enough good players to compete at the top level.

“Every coach has his own philosophy and the type of players he wants,” he said. “You may see a local player and be surprised by how well he fits into a system and earns a call-up.”

“I believe some of our local players are very, very good. They have what it takes to play at the World Cup. Sometimes, we set such high standards that we overlook them and assume they cannot deliver.”

Brimah added that many players who now play abroad were once given chances early in their careers, and local players should be treated the same way.

“Those playing abroad were once given a chance. If local players are also given that opportunity, they can make it. I have confidence in that, but it depends on how the coach structures things,” he said.

“I strongly believe that when local players are given the chance, they can excel.”

Meanwhile, Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz has said players in the Ghana Premier League will be considered, with selection based mainly on form and performance.
