Former Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has revealed he was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer last year, speaking publicly for the first time about a health battle he says he has now overcome.

According to reports from ESPN Africa, the 67-year-old said the illness was discovered in 2025 during routine medical checks, allowing doctors to act quickly.

Hughton had surgery in May to remove his prostate after doctors found the cancer at an early stage. The early discovery was very important, and he is now said to be cancer-free after recovering well.

Speaking about the experience, Hughton said he stayed calm after hearing the news and focused on getting treatment instead of being afraid.

"I’m one year post-operation, and I feel good. It’s all gone very well. I’ve got a lot of energy. Keeping active and busy is part of how I am anyway, but it’s also about rehabilitation and keeping your mind active as well", he said.

I’m very comfortable with my prognosis and my post-operation feelings. I’m in a really good place.

The former Ghana national team coach, who has also managed clubs such as Brighton & Hove Albion, Newcastle United and Norwich City, said he chose to speak publicly to help raise awareness about prostate cancer.

He encouraged men, especially those who may be at higher risk, to go for regular health checks.

Prostate Cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men around the world, and finding it early greatly increases survival chances. Risk factors include age, family history and ethnicity, with research showing that Black men are more likely to be diagnosed.

Hughton’s diagnosis comes after his time with the Ghana national football team ended following their participation in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
