Kofi Adams says no Ghanaian supporter linked to the government’s official travel plans has been denied a United States visa ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Minister for Sports and Recreation dismissed reports claiming Ghanaian fans were being refused visas for the tournament, which begins in just over three weeks.
Speaking at a press briefing, Adams explained that supporters travelling under the Ministry’s organised arrangements are still waiting for interview appointments at the US Embassy and have not yet reached the final stage of the visa process.
“The Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the World Cup Oversight Committee through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have held similar engagements with the United States Embassy regarding Ghana’s preparation toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The engagements have been positive and compact,” he said.
“I have read many reports that suggest visa refusals and that only 8 or 18 Ghanaian fans have been issued visas.”
The minister insisted reports claiming some supporters had already been rejected were inaccurate because the organised group had not yet completed embassy interviews.
“The truth of the matter is that the organised fans that the Ministry is leading are yet to submit themselves to the American Embassy for FIFA people. And so one is surprised that anybody will be talking about only 18 when that is not the case.,” Adams stated.
“However, we do know that individuals may be applying for visas to travel to America, Canada, Mexico, or even as groups through some travel and tour companies. I do not know what is happening to that arrangement.”
The comments came after many football fans became worried about getting visas before the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Adams said talks between Ghanaian officials and the US Embassy have been positive as preparations for the competition continue.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first tournament to be hosted by three countries.
