Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku says his main goal is to lead the Black Stars to Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) glory.
Ghana, who are four-time African champions, last won the AFCON in 1982. Since then, the Black Stars have reached the final three times - in 1992, 2010 and 2015 - but lost on each occasion.
Since Okraku took office in 2019, Ghana have struggled at the tournament, exiting at the group stage in the 2021 and 2023 editions in Cameroon and Ivory Coast. The Black Stars also failed to qualify for the most recent AFCON in Morocco after going through the qualifiers without a win.
Despite the setbacks, Okraku insists winning the AFCON remains his biggest ambition.
“I want to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and that is the fact. Only God knows the number of times we have tried, and we have not been able to win the AFCON title,” he told Asaase Radio.
He added that success across all national teams is important to him.
“Basically, I want to win every tournament for Ghana, and I want to place Ghana on the medal podium on any given occasion,” he said.
Okraku pointed to recent achievements by other national teams as signs of progress.
“We have not won with the Black Stars, but for the U-20, they won the AFCON, and the Black Queens won bronze at the WAFCON and are back again to compete next month,” he said.
“The Black Starlets are back at the AFCON after many years, and the Black Princesses have qualified for the final round of the U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers. Hopefully, they will reach the World Cup. They have done that twice under my leadership,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars will feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Canada and Mexico.
