Asante Kotoko, the Porcupine Warriors, made their trip to Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday night a successful one as they defeated their arch-rivals, Hearts of Oak, 2-1 to lift the inaugural Democracy Cup trophy.

The Kumasi-based team was determined to return to their home turf with the coveted prize and gave it their all from the start.

Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum named an exciting starting eleven that featured some of the newly signed players, and his team's strategy paid off. Asante Kotoko dominated the game early on, creating multiple scoring opportunities and finally got their reward in the 30th minute when Justice Blay converted a penalty kick from 12 yards to give them the lead. The goal took some steam out of Hearts of Oak's sails, and Asante Kotoko went into halftime with a slender advantage.

However, Hearts of Oak came out strongly in the second half and managed to draw parity just five minutes into the half. New signing Asamoah Boateng Afriyie scored with a header in controversial circumstances that left goalkeeper Frederick Asare requiring medical attention. The goal sparked a fierce contest between the two teams, but it was Asante Kotoko who rose above the noise and secured the win with a stunning goal from Peter Amidu.

The winning goal was a masterclass display of skill and determination, and it sealed the deal for Asante Kotoko as they were crowned champions of the inaugural Democracy Cup.
