Ghana’s Black Stars fell 2-0 to Mexico in a pre-World Cup friendly on Saturday morning.

Mexico got off to a perfect start, scoring in the 2nd minute after a mistake by Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. The error allowed Mexican forward Brian Gutierrez to curl in the opening goal and put El Tri ahead early.

After going down, Mexico kept pressing and almost made it 2-0 soon after, but Asare made amends with a great close-range save to keep Ghana in the game.

Ghana’s first real chance came in the 15th minute when Felix Afena-Gyan got into the box, but his effort only found the side netting.

Mexico controlled possession for most of the first half, dictating the pace while the Black Stars struggled to keep the ball and connect passes.

El Tri thought they had doubled their lead in the 39th minute after a well-worked move ended with a header past Asare, but it was disallowed for offside.

Even with the goal ruled out, Mexico were in control and went into halftime 1-0 up after a strong first-half performance.

Mexico picked up where they left off after the break, though Ghana looked more composed. Captain Majeed Ashimeru made a dangerous run into the box but missed the target, and Afena-Gyan forced a good save from the Mexican keeper with a powerful shot. Ghana also came close when another attack hit the crossbar.

Mexico eventually made it 2-0 through Guillermo Martinez, who surged past the Ghana defense and finished calmly past Benjamin Asare.

The Black Stars tried to fight back with substitutions and better ball movement, but Mexico’s defense stayed solid and disciplined.

Despite Ghana’s late push, they couldn’t get a goal back, and Mexico held on comfortably for the 2-0 win.

Ghana will now turn their attention to their next pre-World Cup friendly against Wales before heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
