President John Dramani Mahama has described the Democracy Cup as “not just a trophy but a national symbol,” praising the competition for encapsulating the ideals of Ghana’s democratic journey.
The President made the remarks on Tuesday when the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, led a delegation of parliamentary delegation and sports officials to present the 2025 Democracy Cup trophy at the Jubilee House. The gesture formed part of a symbolic tour of governance institutions and prominent national leaders ahead of this year’s contest.

“This presentation marks the final lap of a symbolic journey that the cup has undertaken,” Bagbin told the President. “We bring this before you, Your Excellency, as the ultimate custodian of our national unity and the embodiment of the collective aspirations of our people.”
Responding, Mahama underlined the initiative’s significance in linking sport with civic identity.

“This cup is not just a trophy but a national symbol,” he said. “It is an enduring reminder of our democratic values and our responsibility to safeguard them. The connection between democracy and sport offers an important platform to engage young people while reinforcing our collective ideals.”
The 2025 edition of the Democracy Cup will take place on Friday, 5 September, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, with Hearts of Oak meeting city rivals Great Olympics in the showcase fixture.
