Former Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has urged the leaders of our various national teams to make their call ups base on merit and not favouritism as he feels that has been one of our major problems in football.
Ghana is always tipped as one of the best countries in Africa that exports talents into Europe but it various national teams have been struggling for the past years.
The Black Stars have been very shambolic in their last three major tournaments having failed to cross the group phase and are at the moment on the brink of missing on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following their abysmal performance in the qualifiers series which has two games left.
In a recent interview on Citi TV, Afriyie Ankrah, who served as the country's Sports Minister from 2013 - 2014, believes if call ups into our various national teams are done based on competence and not favouritism, the country has enough talents to dominate football again on the continent and beyond.
"If the talents are there, they have to be nurtured and integrated into the team. It must all be based on performance, competence, and capability not on connections or favoritism from coaches or FA members.
“If we want to see better results, we must be objective and prioritize the country's interests above personal agendas."
"There is also a noticeable absence of players who have featured at under-17 and under-20 levels in the current Black Stars squad. This gap is one reason why the Black Stars have been struggling."
