The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, along with members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth and Sports, visited English club Sunderland A.F.C. over the weekend to strengthen ties and explore opportunities for the Democracy Cup initiative.

The Democracy Cup, founded by Bagbin, is designed to bridge Parliament and citizens through football while celebrating Ghana’s democratic journey. Since its launch, the tournament has crowned two champions: Asante Kotoko S.C. and Accra Hearts of Oak S.C..

Organized by Primeval Consult and sponsored by KGL Group, the tournament allows winning clubs to gain international exposure. Following the maiden edition, Asante Kotoko visited Washington, USA, and with the newly established partnership with Sunderland, the 2026 winners will travel to the United Kingdom. Hearts of Oak, last year’s champions, are slated to play a Premier League club in South Africa later this year.

The initiative gives players and club officials first-hand experience of advanced football systems while providing opportunities to showcase talent globally, enhancing Ghana’s sporting profile.

The delegation to Sunderland was led by Committee Chairman Hon. Nogbey, Ranking Member Hon. Vincent Ekow Assifuah, and member Hon. Lawrencia Djowornu. The visit underscores ongoing efforts to foster international collaboration through sports while advancing the objectives of the Democracy Cup.
