The Black Queens of Ghana wrapped up their campaign in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with bronze after beating holders South Africa via penalty shootouts in the third-place playoff last night in Casablanca
The game finished 1-1 in regulation time after Sundown’s winger Nonhlanhla Mthandi’s goal put the South Africans ahead on the stroke of half time. But her lead was subsequently cancelled out in the second half thanks to a towering header from Alice Kusi in the second department, which Ghana subsequently won 4-3 in the shootouts.
The three-time WAFCON finalists took out Algeria in the quarter-final but painfully exited the tourney in the semi-final stage after losing to host Morocco - who will face Nigeria in the final.
Ghana headed into the competition for the first time since they last hosted in 2018 and were recently not included among the African giants but this performance definitely will have them included in the top 3 on the continent now.
Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams is full of praises for the performance of the Black Queens throughout the competition stating they have worked hard to make Ghanaians very proud
“As the sector Minister, I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Black Queens of Ghana for winning the bronze medal at the just-ended Women’s African Cup of Nations in Morocco,” said Adams in a statement.
“Your remarkable achievement is a testament to your hard work, determination, and team spirit throughout the tournament.”
“You have proven that Ghana is a shining star in African football, and your success is worth commendation by all Ghanaians. Ghana believed in you, and you made us all proud as a nation.”
The Black Queens have already paid a courtesy visit to Ghana’s Ambassador to Morocco, H.E Charity Gbedawo, and are now expected back in the country from henceforth
