Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has strongly condemned hooliganism in the country’s football scene following the tragic murder of Asante Kotoko supporter Nana Pooley.
Pooley was fatally stabbed by unidentified assailants during Kotoko’s Matchday 19 fixture against Nsoatreman FC at Nana Kronmansah Park in Nsoatre. His killing has reignited concerns over safety at football venues in Ghana.
In an interview with Asempa FM, Adams urged football clubs to enhance their corporate structures to attract sponsorships, stressing that violence drives away potential investors.
"The clubs must improve their corporate structures and be more visible to attract sponsors. Without that, I don’t believe corporate sponsors will be interested," he stated.
He also called for urgent measures to eliminate hooliganism, warning that such incidents damage the reputation of the Ghana Premier League.
"Hooliganism must stop because no brand would want to associate with something negative. We must find a way to make the Premier League more attractive," Adams added.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has made six arrests in connection with Pooley’s murder, including Nsoatreman FC owner Ignatius Baffour Awuah.
