During an interview with Channel One Sports at the Democracy Cup curtain raiser game, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Evans Bobie Opoku, expressed his commitment to improving the poor state of the Accra Sports stadium pitch.
The event, which saw a select side from Ghana’s Parliament take on former Black Stars players, was attended by notable figures such as Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, and former Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye.
Honourable Bobie, who represented the Ghana Parliament side that emerged victorious with a 3-1 score, highlighted the urgent need for action regarding the deteriorating pitch conditions. He assured Ghanaians that steps would be taken to address the issue promptly, as the safety of players is paramount.
“The pitch itself is not all that good. This is the complaint that we've been receiving...the Honourable Minister (Mustapha Ussif) has promised that we need to do something about it so very soon Ghanaians will hear something about it. The pitch is not good at all and when you are running and you're not careful, you will fall down," he said.
The match also featured Ghana’s 2006 and 2010 FIFA World Cup players, including Sulley Muntari, Derek Boateng, John Mensah, and John Paintsil.
In the main game, Accra Hearts of Oak suffered a 2-1 defeat against Kumasi Asante Kotoko.
