Chairman of the Black Meteors management committee, Frederick Acheampong has confirmed that negotiations are underway with the technical team of the Black Stars to release key players for the national under-23 side.
Ghana's Olympic team has been placed in Group A alongside Morocco, Congo, and Guinea for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, scheduled to take place from June 25 to July 8.
Acheampong acknowledged the importance of having certain star players in the squad, as their presence would greatly enhance Ghana's chances in the tournament. The finalist and winning semi-finalist teams will qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
In an interview with Graphic Sports, Acheampong revealed that Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ernest Nuamah, who are currently with the Black Stars, are among the players they are targeting for the under-23 side. He expressed their intention to work towards securing their services for the Black Meteors.
"We are negotiating with the players and the Black Stars technical team to see if most of them will be available. In any case, the Black Stars' game is on the 18th, so after that, those who are available can join us," he explained.
Acheampong clarified that Kudus Mohammed would not be considered for the under-23 assignment due to his date of birth.
However, he confirmed that Sulemana and Nuamah would be part of the team, along with any other player(s) deemed suitable by the coach.
"Kudus is not eligible because he was born in the year 2000, but there are other players in the Black Stars like Kamaldeen and Nuamah who would be needed in the Black Meteors," he stated.
The upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament is scheduled to start on June 25 to July 8.
