Ghana head coach Otto Addo has clarified remarks he made about taking advice from experienced football figures, stating his comments were taken out of context.

The clarification follows public backlash after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), culminating in a disappointing 2-1 loss to Niger.

Before the match, Addo cited his experience working with renowned coaches such as Matthias Sammer, Jürgen Klopp, and Edin Terzić, emphasizing the importance of learning from knowledgeable football professionals. However, after the defeat, the coach explained that his comments were misinterpreted.

“Sometimes people take things out of context,” Addo remarked. “I’m just saying that when I’m criticized, I don’t take it personally. If someone asks, ‘Why didn’t we play like this?’ or, ‘Why did we do that?’ that’s fine. But if it gets personal, I refer more to people who understand the game and talk.”

He clarified that he also values constructive feedback from Ghanaian football enthusiasts. “A lot of Ghanaians I talk to understand the game and say, ‘Oh, Otto, maybe we have to do this on set pieces.’ I take my advice from a lot of experience,” he said.

Addressing calls for his resignation, Addo stated that emotional reactions do not deter him. “It’s not like it can affect me. After every game, I review what we could have done better. There’s always something to improve, and for this, I need expertise.”

Despite the setbacks, Addo expressed optimism about the Black Stars' future. “There are positives to see. I think there will be better days ahead. It’s never always going to be down. I’m very sure,” he said.

Reaffirming his dedication, Addo pledged to give his best for the team. “Until I’m here, I will give everything. This is how I grew up, how I became a professional, and this is what I can do,” he concluded.

The Ghana Football Association's Executive Council will meet on Wednesday to determine Addo’s future as head coach.
