Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has issued a strong warning over the growing trend of violence and misconduct at domestic football matches, stating that if the situation continues unchecked, Ghanaian fans will increasingly turn their attention to foreign leagues.

The Minister emphasized the urgent need for calm, discipline, and professionalism within the local football ecosystem—both on and off the pitch.

“If we allow such things to continue, 90 per cent of the football-loving fans will focus on the foreign leagues rather than your own league,” Adams said. “People must be punished when they are found to be doing something wrong, irrespective of their status in the country or their political affiliation.”

His remarks come in the wake of several recent incidents involving crowd trouble, assaults on match officials, and vandalism of stadium infrastructure in the Ghana Premier League and Division One League. These episodes have not only attracted negative press but have also raised concerns over the safety of players, referees, and supporters.

The Minister noted that while the government remains committed to investing in sports infrastructure and development, such efforts would be rendered useless if the domestic game becomes synonymous with chaos and insecurity.

For many observers, Adams’ message is clear: if local football is to thrive, it must first be safe.
