Ghana's captain, Andre Ayew, has released a video apologizing for the disappointing performance of the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
The apology comes eight days after Ghana's exit from the tournament following a draw against Mozambique.
In the video posted on his Instagram account, Andre Ayew, flanked by two Ghana flags, addressed Ghanaians and football fans, acknowledging the difficulty of the past days.
“This past days have been very difficult for every Ghanaian and every Ghanaian football fan, and myself,” he said.
“I would like to apologise for the results of the AFCON that we just exited. We should have done better. We should have gotten better results too.”
Ghana's disappointing campaign saw them finish third in a group that included Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. The Black Stars faced a 2-1 defeat to Cape Verde and secured back-to-back 2-2 draws against Egypt and Mozambique, leading to their elimination from the tournament.
This marks the second consecutive AFCON where Ghana has exited at the group stages without securing a victory, extending the nation's quest for its fifth AFCON title to 42 years. The apology from Ayew reflects a recognition of the team's underperformance and aims to address the disappointment felt by the Ghanaian fans.
