Legon Cities 2-1 win over Berekum Chelsea at the University of Ghana Stadium was steady and quite spectacular, truth be told.
The most important thing for Yaw Acheampong is that his side picked up three points, capitalising on Karela United's mishap against Heart of Lions to jump up into sixteenth in the Ghana Premier League, behind 'embattled' Nsoatreman only on one point difference.
Alidu Mohammed and Raymond Agyemang ensured that the Royals keep hold of the three points - leaving their visitors exit the capital bruised. However, the remaining minutes of the game was a touch uncomfortable for the hosts as they failed to get out of third gear.
Cities should have been boosted but they were lethargic early on as Berekum Chelsea's intense press forced some sloppy errors and concessions of possession.
The Royals set the tone for a nervy opening, though Alidu nearly did, rattle the Bibires post just before the quarter-hour mark after a swift breakaway led by Fredrick Akatuk. But, any lingering nerves the former Accra Lions player had were settled on the half-hour mark as Alidu Mohammed showed his class to open the scoring.
In other games this season, Cities have not been allowed to cruise over the red line after falling back into the cellar dwelling, but that was not the case here. Berekum Chelsea were full of energy and endeavour, pressing high up the pitch in order to retrieve possession.
They were also crisp and connected with their passing and fully deserved to half the deficit thanks to Stephen Amankona's thunderous effort, which went flying into the net in the 81st minute mark.
The University of Ghana Stadium were on their feet again four minutes later, this time to commend a wonderful individual goal from substitute Raymond Agyemang.
As the match neared its conclusion, Cities stayed awake - lightning-fast play as they embarked on a mazy run that had Frank Oppong, Kuffour Asamoah and the rest of the Bibires defenders following the Royals attackers around like a lost puppy.
Berekum Chelsea never really took control of the contest, with Cities in the game without fully threatening themselves, though the Royals should have extended the lead first through Akatuk, who fired inches wide after more superb movement, and then through William Adjei, who somehow put the ball wide after some brilliant setup play.
The three points takes Cities to 16th with 20 points, although they are still in the relegation pecking order. Berekum Chelsea on the other hand are 8th with 28 points.
