Asante Kotoko staged a dramatic late fightback to secure a 2-2 draw against Medeama at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday, clawing their way back from a two-goal deficit to snatch a crucial point in stoppage time.
Medeama made a blistering start, silencing the home fans after just five minutes. Derrick Fordjour reacted quickest to a loose ball in the Kotoko box and struck a clean volley past goalkeeper Camara to put the visitors ahead. Things worsened for Kotoko in the 18th minute when Yussif Mubarik calmly converted a penalty, leaving the Porcupine Warriors stunned as the Yellow and Mauve supporters erupted in celebration.
Kotoko struggled for rhythm throughout the first half, but returned from the break with renewed energy and urgency. Their improved approach paid dividends in the 69th minute when Peter Amidu Acquah pounced inside the penalty area, firing home to halve the deficit and ignite belief within the stadium.
With momentum shifting, Kotoko pushed relentlessly for the equaliser. Their perseverance finally paid off in the 95th minute when captain Samba O’Neil rose highest to head in a dramatic leveller, sparking wild celebrations among the home faithful.
Match statistics highlighted the evenly contested nature of the game. Possession was split evenly at 50 percent each, but Kotoko created more opportunities, recording 20 shots to Medeama’s nine. Seven of Kotoko’s efforts were on target, compared to five for the visitors.
Medeama, moments away from going top of the league, now remain in second place after recording back-to-back draws. Kotoko, meanwhile, extend their winless run to three matches, with the point offering only partial relief following their midweek loss.
Next up, the Porcupine Warriors travel to face Hohoe United, while Medeama prepare for a clash with Berekum Chelsea as both sides aim to rediscover winning ways.
