Young Apostles kick off their second-ever Ghana Premier League campaign with a tough assignment against Medeama SC at the Wenchi Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Yellow and Mauves ran out comfortable 3-0 winners when the two sides last met in April, extending their dominance in this budding rivalry (W2).
This will be only the third competitive meeting between the sides, but the clash already promises fireworks.
Match Preview
Medeama comes into the new campaign with renewed ambition after an underwhelming 2024/25 season where they finished eighth, failing to secure CAF inter-club qualification. Despite investing nearly €175,000 in new signings this summer, coach Ibrahim Tanko, who is one of the league’s most respected tacticians, knows expectations remain high.
Tanko has spoken bullishly about his side’s chances of competing with the league’s elite, pointing to a solid pre-season that included a 2-0 win over Nations FC, though they also suffered setbacks against Dreams FC (4-2) and Samartex (1-0).
For Young Apostles, survival was the story last season. The Bono side finished 15th on 40 points, only five above relegation. Now, with a year’s top-flight experience under their belt, coach Abu Abdul-Hanaan and his players will aim for mid-table security and beyond. However, their record against Medeama does little to inspire confidence heading into this clash.
Team News
Young Apostles
The Apostles are expected to line up in a familiar 4-3-3 system with captain Quansah anchoring the defence. Playmaker Afram remains central to their midfield creativity, while Sakitey will spearhead the attack, supported by Issah and Opoku on the flanks. There are no major injury concerns reported ahead of the season opener.
Medeama SC
Tanko has an almost full-strength squad to choose from and could hand debuts to several high-profile signings. Defender Richard Sackey (from Aduana FC) is set to slot into the back three, while ex-Eleven Wonders midfielder Desmond Baffoe provides fresh energy in the middle of the park. Attacker Richard Owusu and winger Fuzy Taylor are also pushing for starts after arriving this summer.
Young Apostles possible starting lineup (4-3-3):
Masawudu (GK); Quansah (C), Abu, Muntalla; Adamu, Afram, Amegbe, Borrtey; Issah, Opoku, Sakitey
Medeama SC possible starting lineup (3-4-2-1):
Kyei (GK); Mubarik (C), Sackey, Kamaradini, Sharif; Nurudeen, Tetteh, Appiah; Dzakpasu, Babil, Owusu
We say: Young Apostles 0-2 Medeama SC
Medeama looks the sharper, deeper, and more experienced outfit heading into this clash. With Tanko’s men armed with firepower up front and fresh steel in defence, they should have too much quality for a Young Apostles side still finding their feet in the GPL.
Expect Medeama’s new recruits to make the difference: Desmond Baffoe dictating the tempo in midfield, and Richard Owusu breaking the deadlock midway through the first half with a composed finish. The second goal could come late on, with substitute Fuzy Taylor exploiting tired legs to seal the win.
