Dr. Daniel McKorley, Executive Chairman of McDan Group of Companies, has alleged that match-fixing played a significant role in Great Olympics' relegation from the Ghana Premier League last season.
Great Olympics were relegated by a narrow margin, finishing just one point shy of safety with 44 points. They were overtaken by Hearts of Oak, Legon Cities, and Heart of Lions, who all ended the season with 45 points. Heart of Lions secured their survival with a controversial penalty in stoppage time to draw 2-2 against Berekum Chelsea, while Hearts of Oak came from behind to defeat Bechem United 3-2.
In a recent statement, McDan expressed his frustration with the state of Ghanaian football, attributing the relegation to the detrimental effects of match-fixing. “The match-fixing is too much. They are destroying our football with betting,” McDan said. “When a ball is shot, the goalkeeper goes one way and the ball goes the other way. Football is beautiful, don’t destroy it for us.”
McDan, who sponsored Great Olympics last season, further added, “It is because of the match-fixing that our players can’t play at the highest level. It is because of the match-fixing that Great Olympics were relegated.”
