Basake Holy Stars coach Johnson Smith says Wednesday’s victory over Asante Kotoko is “just the beginning” of what he hopes to build at the club.
Holy Stars brought Kotoko’s unbeaten Ghana Premier League run to an abrupt end with a 2-1 win at the AAK II Arena, marking a perfect start for Smith, who was appointed only a day before the game.
“This is just the beginning,” he said after the match. “I don’t have to talk much. This is my first match so I don’t have to brag too much.”
The hosts struck four minutes after the restart when Richmond Somuah calmly finished to send the home fans into wild celebration.
Kotoko issued an immediate response as Kwame Poku levelled in the 53rd minute, shifting the flow of the game in the visitors’ favour as they pressed for a comeback
But despite Kotoko’s second-half pressure, Holy Stars stayed disciplined and struck late. Prince Tweneboah produced a stoppage-time winner, sealing a dramatic victory and all three points.
The result moves Holy Stars to nine points and strengthens their bid to move clear of the relegation places, while Kotoko remain fourth, just three points adrift of the top - after missing the chance to close the gap.
