Xabi Alonso has reportedly reached a total agreement to become the new manager of Chelsea FC, with an official announcement from Stamford Bridge expected in the coming days.
The 44-year-old Spanish coach is understood to be finalising a four-year contract running until June 2030, as Chelsea continue a significant overhaul of their football structure following a turbulent managerial period.
According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, Alonso will take on the title of “manager” rather than “head coach,” giving him wider authority across tactical planning, recruitment, and long-term squad development.
This expanded role is seen as central to Chelsea’s decision, with Alonso reportedly insisting on having a direct influence over transfer strategy before committing to the project.
Club executives are said to have accepted those conditions as part of a broader plan to establish a more stable and clearly defined sporting direction.
Alonso has been out of management since leaving Real Madrid CF in January 2026, following a brief spell marked by internal tensions and a challenging dressing-room environment.
Despite his strong ties to Liverpool FC from his playing career, the Merseyside club chose to continue under Arne Slot, leaving Chelsea with a clear path to secure his services.
Chelsea’s recent managerial instability has been widely documented, with Enzo Maresca departing earlier in 2026, followed by Liam Rosenior’s short-lived tenure before interim coach Calum McFarlane took charge.
The club now believes Alonso’s appointment can bring long-term stability and a clear tactical identity.
The former Bayer Leverkusen boss is highly regarded for his progressive 3-4-2-1 system, built on positional fluidity, attacking wing-backs, and creative midfield structures.
Chelsea are particularly hopeful that his approach will maximise the potential of key talents such as Cole Palmer, who remains central to the club’s long-term project.
With the agreement reportedly finalised, Chelsea appear set to usher in a new era under one of Europe’s most highly rated young coaches.
