Ghana's Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, on Saturday lauded the Black Queens after their dramatic penalty shootout victory over Algeria sent them into the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Ghana edged past Algeria 4-2 on penalties after a 0-0 draw in the quarterfinals at the Berkane Municipal Stadium, booking their first semi-final appearance in the tournament since 2016.

In a statement released shortly after the Black Queens win, Adams described the moment as one of national pride.

“You have given the nation a reason to believe again,” the minister said. “This achievement reflects your discipline, composure and the strength of your collective spirit. The journey through the group stage was not without its challenges, but you remained focused, built confidence with every match, and showed the quality and resilience worthy of your name.”

The victory marks Ghana’s first semi-final appearance at WAFCON in nine years and sets up a high-stakes encounter with host nation Morocco on Tuesday, July 22 in Casablanca.

Adams pledged the government’s continued support as the team prepares for the next challenge. “I want to assure you of the continued support of the Government of Ghana,” he said. “The Ministry remains committed to providing everything required to keep you focused and ready for what lies ahead. The entire nation stands with you.”

Grace Asantewaa, named Woman of the Match for her commanding midfield display, said the team's success is a product of weeks of hard work and preparation. “We’ve been working hard, and it’s time for Ghana to win the WAFCON,” she said.

Ghana is aiming to lift the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations trophy for the first time in its history. With renewed belief, strong government backing and a confident squad, national expectations are mounting.

“Stay grounded, stay united, and go into the next match knowing that a grateful country is behind you,” Adams added. “Go for gold. Ghana believes in you.”
