FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran will take part in the 2026 World Cup, dismissing doubts linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Infantino made the remarks during a visit to Iran’s national team training camp near Antalya, Turkey, where he stressed that football should remain separate from politics.
The issue had drawn attention in recent weeks due to tensions in the Middle East and reported concerns from Donald Trump about Iran’s involvement in a tournament that will be largely hosted in the United States.
However, FIFA has taken a clear position, insisting that qualification earned on the pitch will not be questioned.
“We don’t do politics because we are not politicians. Our business is football… Iran has qualified for the World Cup and will participate,” Infantino said.
He also assured that FIFA would fully support Iran’s preparations for the tournament, adding that he is personally committed to ensuring everything runs smoothly for the team.
Iran secured their place through the qualification process, and FIFA’s stance underlines its policy of prioritising sporting merit over political considerations.
