Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah declared as he expressed optimism about the Black Stars' chances in the upcoming tournament hosted in Ivory Coast next year.
The four-time African champions haven't secured the coveted trophy since 1982, facing a 41-year trophy drought. Appiah, who led Ghana to qualify for the 2006 and 2010 World Cup, believes the current team has the potential to end this long-standing quest but emphasizes the importance of self-belief.
"I am very confident that Ghana can win the AFCON," he stated during the unveiling of the TotalEnergies AFCON trophy at the TotalEnergies Headquarters in Accra, Ghana. Acknowledging the challenges in contemporary football, he urged the players to have faith in themselves and the team's abilities.
"Today football is played everywhere, and that’s why you’ll find it difficult to even play Comoros. We should believe in ourselves and in the team. They should go out there and represent Ghana the best they can," he added.
Ghana has been drawn into Group B alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. The AFCON is scheduled to kick off on January 13, 2024, and conclude on February 11, 2024.
