Moroccan international Yasser Al-Zabiri has shed light on the reasons behind his decision to join French side Rennes from Portuguese club Famalicao, describing the move as a step he had long envisioned.
The Youth World Cup top scorer in Chile explained, in an interview with Rennes’ official website, that the club’s stature and history played a major role in his choice.
He revealed that Rennes had always been on his radar, particularly because of the many high-profile players who previously wore the club’s colours, a factor that increased his excitement about starting a new chapter in his career.
Al-Zabiri also pointed to advice from close friends as a key influence in his decision.
“I spoke with some friends of mine and they advised me to come because it is a suitable team for me, and the presence of Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal here will help me adapt quickly. We have been friends for years and have known each other since the Mohammed VI Academy,” he said.
The Marrakech-born striker added that he was already familiar with Rennes’ style of play before completing the move, noting that he followed the team closely and admired their brand of football.
He explained that the club’s attractive style, combined with a strong competitive rhythm, convinced him that Rennes was the right environment for his development.
Speaking about the challenge ahead, Al-Zabiri expressed enthusiasm about competing in Ligue 1.
“The French league is strong and characterized by many physical contacts and a high pace, and I am excited to take on this experience and give my best,” he stated.
The Moroccan forward also highlighted his playing style, underlining his willingness to contribute beyond goals.
“I love playing with the ball and helping my teammates. I am a striker and my goal is to score, but I also help the team with passes, teamwork and pressing,” he explained.
Al-Zabiri concluded by outlining his ambitions with Rennes, stressing his desire for quick integration and collective success.
“I want to integrate quickly and feel like I am part of a family, then play as many matches as possible and help the team achieve good results and perhaps reach European competitions,” he said.
