Nigeria football great, Nwankwo Kanu has warned Super Eagles players to buckle up, warning them to give their all in terms of performance to the national team.

According to Kanu, players who are handed call-ups to the Super Eagles should replicate their club form for the national team.

Kanu, 48, and current chairman of Enyimba is one of the greatest players in Nigerian football history, winning a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics while playing an important role.

While the Super Eagles are enjoying a scintillating period in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with multiple players exciting Nigerian fans with their output, certain players like Victor Boniface have struggled to replicate their club form for the Super Eagles. And for players like that? Kanu had lashed out at them.

“They can’t be doing well in their various clubs and then come to the national team they will not do the same. No,” the former Arsenal man told Brila.

“When you come to the national team you give more than what you give to the clubs. You can’t wear that jersey and be slacking. If you’re giving your club 100%, give us 200%.

The level of coaching available at the national team has been constantly suggested as a reason for this disparity in performance level, as the players are being trained by some of the best minds in the game at the club level.

However, this excuse does not fly for the former Ajax and Inter Milan star who maintained the burden is on the player to show up regardless of external factors.

“The players need to understand that we may be talking about coaching all the time but they need to do more. From what I’ve seen in recent matches, they are improving, and they’re getting better.”
