Arsenal are reportedly tracking emerging Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi, a player drawing comparisons to Chelsea legend Michael Essien, as they assess potential reinforcements ahead of the January transfer window.
According to The Mail, the Gunners have placed the FC Nordsjaelland starlet on their scouting list following his standout performances in the Danish Superliga. However, they are not alone—Bournemouth are also keen and view the 19-year-old as someone who could make an immediate impact under manager Andoni Iraola, much like several of their recent breakthrough signings.
Yirenkyi, valued at around £20 million, has enjoyed a breakout season after being converted into a holding midfielder. Originally deployed as a right-sided midfielder—and even featuring at right-back during his international debut in May—the youngster has flourished in his new deeper role.
The transformation came under the guidance of Nordsjaelland manager Jens Fonsskov Olsen, and significantly, under the watch of Ghanaian legend Michael Essien, who serves as assistant coach at the club. Yirenkyi’s composure, power, and ball-winning ability in the No. 6 role have fueled growing comparisons to the former Chelsea star.
This season, the Ghana international has made 16 appearances, contributing one goal and two assists across all competitions. In total, he has recorded three goals and four assists in 34 matches since joining Nordsjaelland in 2024 from Ghanaian academy side Right to Dream, the club’s sister institution.
With interest building in England, Yirenkyi is emerging as one of Africa’s most exciting young midfield prospects—and a player to watch as the January window approaches.
