Former Manchester United and England right-back Gary Neville admits that Michael Essien didn't get enough recognition that he deserves during his spell at Chelsea.
Michael Essien featured for Chelsea from 2005 to 2014, after his move from French Ligue 1 side Olympic Lyon.
He joined Chelsea as the Ligue 1 player of the year after helping Lyon to win league title back-to-back after his move from Bastia.
The midfielder enforcer was pivotal in Jose Mourinho's first reign at the London club, after Abramovich's takeover.
He propelled Chelsea to win the English Premier League in 2006 and 2010 and the champions league in 2012.
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville insists that Michael Essien was an unsung hero during his time at Chelsea.
“A player that played at a top Premier League club and didn't get the plaudits of others was Michael Essien at Chelsea in those first two or three years,” Neville admitted on Sky Sports.
“The impact he had on that team, from his running ability, the energy from midfield, balancing of Frank, I thought Essien was a brilliant player," he concluded.
Michael Essien is now a coach at Danish club FC Nordsjaelland.
