ACF Fiorentina have officially completed the mutual termination of Tariq Lamptey’s contract, bringing an unfortunate end to the Ghanaian defender’s difficult spell in Italy.
The 25-year-old right-back joined Fiorentina last summer in a reported €6 million transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion FC and signed a three-year contract amid hopes of reviving his career after several injury setbacks in England.
However, Lamptey’s time in Florence quickly turned into a nightmare.
The former Chelsea FC youngster managed only two brief appearances for Fiorentina, featuring as a substitute against Napoli before making his first and only start against Como on September 21, 2025.
Disaster struck during that match when Lamptey suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament just 22 minutes into the game.
The injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season, and he never played for Fiorentina again.
Lamptey’s latest setback added to a long history of injury problems that have disrupted his promising career over the years.
Once regarded as one of England’s brightest young full-backs and praised by Frank Lampard after an impressive senior debut at Chelsea, the Ghana international has struggled to maintain fitness consistently throughout his professional journey.
His Fiorentina spell ultimately ended with only 25 minutes of competitive football in the club’s colours.
The contract termination, completed with two Serie A matches still remaining, now leaves Lamptey as a free agent ahead of the summer transfer window.
The timing is particularly difficult with the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, as his prolonged absence from competitive football makes a return to the Ghana national football team squad increasingly unlikely.
