Leicester City head coach Martí Cifuentes has explained why Abdul Fatawu Issahaku did not feature for Ghana during the ongoing international break, stressing that the decision was taken to protect the youngster’s fitness.
The 20-year-old winger, who played a key role in Leicester’s promotion back to the Premier League last season, was left out of Ghana’s matchday squads for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying games against Chad and Mali. His absence raised questions among Black Stars supporters, particularly given his growing influence at both club and international level.
Addressing the matter, Cifuentes clarified that the decision was in Fatawu’s best interest.
“We’re trying to protect Abdul; this break would have been very good for his recovery. He’s gotten better in training and on the pitch since I’ve arrived; he’ll be in optimal condition,” the Spanish coach explained.
Since taking over at Leicester, Cifuentes has relied on Fatawu’s creativity and direct play to inject pace into his attack. However, with a demanding Premier League season ahead, the coaching staff have taken precautions to ensure the Ghanaian remains in peak condition.
Fatawu, who joined Leicester permanently from Sporting CP this summer after an impressive loan spell, has been tipped as one of the breakout stars of the Foxes’ campaign. Cifuentes believes the winger will return from the break sharper and ready to make a decisive impact.
The Black Stars, meanwhile, secured a crucial away victory against Chad before preparing to host Mali in Accra on Monday, September 8. Ghana coach Otto Addo is expected to reintegrate Fatawu into the squad for the next round of qualifiers, provided his recovery continues smoothly.
