Mohammed Sofo is aiming to have a stellar season in the 2024-25 Major League Soccer (MLS) campaign after scoring his first goal on his debut.
The Ghanaian forward scored his 1st league goal on Saturday as New York Red Bulls outclassed Nashville SC 2-0.
Sofo, who joined New York Red Bulls from Malian club Guidars FC in 2024, struck his side's first goal in the 7th minute after a well worked Eric Chupo-Moting's bullet which smacked the right post.
Swedish forward Emil Forsberg dinked home the New York Red Bulls second on the day in the 30th minute.
After his first stunning performance in the top flight, the Ghanaian youngster was grateful to head coach Sandro Schwarz for doing him the honors by handling him his first start of the campaign.
Speaking after the Nashville clash, Sofo said: “I came in today and had a conversation with the coach, and he told me that I was starting tonight,” Sofo said after the match.
“You have to always be ready. You never know. So personally, I was ready to play. So when he told me I was playing, it wasn’t a shock because mentally I was ready to play.
He added: “When you’re in front of the goal, it doesn’t matter who is shooting, you have to be ready. You never know what will happen. I think it’s something we used to do on the training ground, so I was always ready and that was it."
The New York Red Bulls will be heading to Atlanta United for their match-day 3 fixture. With the victory over the Boys in Gold, they are now 3 points on 5th' above fourteenth-placed Nashville SC.
