The former FC Nordsjaelland guardsman has completed his transfer switch to the American top-flight campaigners in this winter transfer window

Ghanaian defender Willy Kumado has joined Major League Soccer (MLS) side San Diego FC from Danish Superliga club Lyngby Boldklub on a two-year deal, the club have confirmed.

The 22-year-old is linking up with the Snapdragon Stadium campaigners on a permanent basis ahead of the start of the 2025 football season in the American top division contest.

An excerpt of an official confirmation over the signing of the Right to Dream Academy graduate read: ''San Diego FC (SDFC) today announced the signing of Ghanaian defender Willy Kumado from Danish Superliga club Lyngby Boldklub on a two-year contract through the 2026 MLS season, with Club options for 2027 and 2028. Kumado will occupy an International Roster Slot and will be added to the roster pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) and P-1 Visa.''

Sporting director Tyler Heaps had this to say right after landing the services of the Ghanaian stopper via the club's official website: ''We’re excited to welcome Willy to SDFC and back into the Right to Dream family. He is a fullback who can impact the game through his pace and technical qualities that we believe translate very well to MLS. His previous experience at RTD Ghana and FC Nordsjaelland will allow him to settle quickly into the playing style. We’re looking forward to getting him in market and introducing him to the rest of the group.”

Before sealing his permanent transfer move to the MLS side, he figured in 57 games by registering 7 assists across all competitions for Lyngby Boldklub in the Danish top-flight spanning across two seasons.

Kumado is yet to be cap-tied by the Ghana Senior Men's National Team, the Back Stars at the international level.
