Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has acknowledged that his side displayed signs of rustiness despite their commanding 3-0 victory over Egypt in Ismailia on Thursday.
Ghana took a major step toward qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after goals from Doris Boaduwaa, Mary Amponsah, and Grace Asantewaa handed them a comfortable first-leg advantage.
Bjorkegren, however, noted that the team lacked the sharpness and cohesion seen in previous matches, attributing it to limited preparation time before the fixture.
“You can see that we haven’t been together for a while; it doesn’t connect like it did a couple of months ago,” he said. “But I do think the energy was there. We did many good things, and in the end, we performed overall well. To win a difficult away game 3-0 is fantastic.”
The Swedish tactician added that the result has put Ghana in a strong position ahead of the second leg in Accra.
“The result is amazing. It gives us a good position to make sure we reach the next WAFCON,” he emphasized.
Egypt started brightly, creating early chances that failed to test goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan. Ghana gradually grew into the game, breaking the deadlock late in the first half when Doris Boaduwaa latched onto a clever pass from Jennifer Cudjoe to score.
Mary Amponsah and Grace Asantewaa added two more goals in the second half to seal a convincing win for the Black Queens, who will host the return leg on Tuesday in Accra, seeking to confirm their qualification for Morocco 2026.
