Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has said a potential return for Andre Ayew to the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup would not come as a surprise, but stressed that the decision rests entirely with the coaching staff.
Ayew has not featured for the Black Stars since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where Ghana were eliminated at the group stage. His absence has since been a topic of debate, particularly following his recent return to club football in Europe.
The 36-year-old forward signed for NAC Breda after spending six months without a club following his departure from Le Havre AC. The move has reignited discussion over whether the experienced attacker could be recalled to the national side.
Speaking to Graphic Sports, Mr Adams acknowledged the ongoing public conversation but underlined that he would not interfere in team selection.
“Fortunately, I’m the minister. Unfortunately, I’m not the coach. The coach has a final say on this; if they include him, why not? I won’t be surprised,” he said.
Ayew was omitted from Ghana’s squad for recent international friendlies against Austria and Germany, a decision that has intensified scrutiny over his future with the team.
Since joining NAC Breda on a free transfer, the former Black Stars captain has made 11 appearances and scored once. Despite these modest statistics, some supporters continue to advocate for his return, pointing to his experience and leadership.
Ayew remains Ghana’s most-capped player and has been a central figure in the national team for more than a decade, representing the country at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and on the global stage at the World Cup.
