Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has explained his decision to make Benjamin Asare Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper, stating that the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper earned his position through hard work, consistency, and merit.
Asare, 33, played a crucial role in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, keeping several clean sheets and displaying impressive composure between the sticks. Despite his contributions, some fans have questioned the level of competition he faced during the qualifiers.
Speaking in an interview with Metro TV, Addo was clear that his selections are driven purely by performance and not sentiment.
“Every decision is based on performance,” Addo said. “Benjamin Asare has proven himself to be number one for the team.”
The former Borussia Dortmund coach praised Asare’s agility, reflexes, and calm presence, describing him as a player who has earned the trust of the technical team through consistent displays in both training and matches.
Addo’s endorsement highlights his confidence in the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper as Ghana prepares for next year’s World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
