Bulgarian striker Bernard Tekpetey, based in Ludogorets, has earned recognition in Chris Hughton's preliminary squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a testament to his outstanding performance.
Unveiled on December 20, 2023, the provisional squad comprises established players like the Ayew brothers, Thomas Partey, Daniel Amartey, and Inaki Williams. Among them, Tekpetey's return to the Black Stars stands out, fueled by his impressive stint with Ludogorets over the last two seasons.
Hughton's 55-man provisional list, submitted to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), allows room for finalization until January 3. This flexibility enables him to trim the squad to the final 27 players who will represent Ghana in the upcoming AFCON.
Tekpetey, a former Schalke 04 striker, has shone brightly with Ludogorets, amassing 11 goals and 7 assists in 32 games across various competitions this season. With a Black Stars debut in 2017 and two caps to his name, the 26-year-old eyes a coveted spot in the squad for the continental showdown.
Positioned in Group B for the 2023 AFCON, Ghana faces formidable competition from Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique. The Black Stars, armed with a rich AFCON history, aim to augment their four titles, the last of which was secured in 1982.
Scheduled to kick off on January 13 and concluding on February 11, 2024, the AFCON promises a captivating football spectacle, providing an arena for the Black Stars and their competitors to vie for continental glory.
