Former Ghana international Hans Adu Sarpei has cast doubt over the current Black Stars squad, insisting the team lacks the confidence, experience, and unity that once defined Ghana’s golden generation.
Ghana head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup under mounting pressure following a run of poor results and uncertainty surrounding the technical setup after the dismissal of Otto Addo.
Sarpei, a member of Ghana’s historic 2010 World Cup squad, believes the gap between that team and the current crop is significant.
“Don’t compare the 2010 squad to this current one. They are two completely different teams,” he stated.
He highlighted key differences in mentality and cohesion, pointing out that the previous generation had built strong chemistry over time.
“We had more confidence, more experience and bigger personalities in the team than we do now. We had also played together for about three or four years before that World Cup,” he explained.
According to Sarpei, the present situation is far more complicated, with frequent changes and off-field uncertainties affecting the team’s stability.
“Now it’s different. New players are coming in, there are issues involving the coaching situation and the players, and they didn’t go to the Nations Cup. There are so many things happening now, so it’s not easy for the players,” he added.
Ghana will compete in Group L at the World Cup, facing England, Croatia, and Panama when the tournament kicks off on June 11, with expectations tempered by concerns over the team’s readiness.
