Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has filed a 10 million cedis defamation lawsuit against journalist Dan Kweku Yeboah and Peace FM, alongside media outlets Pulse Ghana and GhanaWeb, over claims that he misappropriated $2 million from the GFA.
Nyantakyi, who also served as a member of the FIFA Council, filed the lawsuit on Tuesday morning, describing Yeboah’s allegations as “reckless and defamatory.” He argues that the statements, suggesting he withdrew and misappropriated GFA funds, lack factual basis and were intended to tarnish his reputation.
The lawsuit includes Pulse Ghana and GhanaWeb due to their role in circulating Yeboah’s claims, which Nyantakyi contends have caused him severe public and professional harm. According to the filing, Yeboah’s words, “President Kwesi Nyantakyi nkoa ko yee GFA Sika two million dollars ($2m) efee Unibank ko di ye,” translated as “President Kwesi Nyantakyi alone went to Unibank, withdrew GFA’s two million dollars, and misappropriated it,” were designed to malign him.
Nyantakyi’s legal team has accused Yeboah and the media outlets of neglecting journalistic standards by failing to verify the facts before publication. He is seeking both damages and a formal retraction from all defendants, claiming the statements were malicious and intended to erode his public image.
The lawsuit underscores Nyantakyi’s assertion that these unfounded allegations have subjected him to undue public distress and calls for accountability.
