John Paintsil has revealed that his first house was financed by officials from Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, two prominent Ghanaian football clubs.
Despite his desire to play for Liberty Professionals, both Kotoko and Hearts of Oak expressed interest in signing him.
Paintsil, the former Ghana international, recounted how he resisted lucrative offers from the chairmen of Hearts of Oak, Herbert Mensah, and Asante Kotoko, Harry Zarkour, who were eager to secure his signature. Despite receiving substantial sums of money from both club officials, Paintsil remained steadfast in his decision to join Liberty Professionals.
"It was through God that I got to Israel, people kept questioning why I wanted to go there because both Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko wanted me," Paintsil explained.
In a meeting facilitated by Herbert Mensah in Osu, Paintsil received significant financial support to entice him to join Asante Kotoko. Similarly, Harry Zarkour of Hearts of Oak made a similar offer to secure Paintsil's services. However, the footballer used the money from both encounters to purchase a plot in Tema Community 12, where he eventually built his first house.
Paintsil expressed gratitude for the generosity of the club officials, acknowledging that the funds provided by them played a crucial role in establishing his first home. Despite ultimately choosing Liberty Professionals over the lucrative offers from Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, Paintsil's honesty and commitment were appreciated by the club officials.
“They all gave me money, and I bought a plot in Tema Community 12, so it's through their money that I was able to build my first house in Community 12 because of how honest I was to them. They gave me their blessings, and after 6 months at Liberty, I got the chance to travel to Israel,” Paintsil shared on the Experience in Life show.
Throughout his career, which included stints at Fulham and West Ham, Paintsil made over 80 appearances for the Ghana national team. His experience highlights the intersection of football, financial support, and personal choices in shaping the careers of players.
