Defender Jonas Adjei Adjetey made his long-awaited debut for the Black Stars in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan in Libya.
The FC Basel centre-back stepped in for AS Monaco’s Mohammed Salisu, who was forced off the pitch due to an injury with just 15 minutes remaining at the Martyrs of February Stadium.
Adjetey's debut was marked by a notable moment when he received a yellow card for a foul on Sudanese winger Seif Teiri late in the match, highlighting the intensity of the encounter.
Unfortunately for the Black Stars, their hopes of qualifying for AFCON now hang by a thread following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to the Falcons of Jedinah. Quick-fire goals from Ahmed Mahmoud Mohamed and Mohamed Abdelrahman in the second half have left the four-time African champions on the brink of missing out on the 2025 tournament in Morocco.
Ghana currently sits third in Group F with just two points from four matches. The team will need to secure victories against Angola and Niger in their final two qualifiers in November to keep their AFCON dreams alive.
Despite the setback, Adjetey is seen as one of the brightest prospects for the future of the Black Stars as coach Otto Addo continues to rebuild the team.
