Football Administrator and former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, Fred Pappoe, is advocating for a comprehensive review of the Black Stars' bonus structure.
Pappoe expresses concern about the current system, emphasizing the need for a reevaluation to boost player and management morale.
In an interview on Happy FM, Pappoe suggests a revamped bonus structure for the Black Stars that is motivating for both players and management, proposing a shift from traditional winning bonuses to a system of qualification bonuses.
“Whether it should be a winning bonus or qualification bonus, I believe the bonus structure of the Black Stars should be reviewed. The structure should be done in a way that becomes motivating for the playing body and management as well.”
Addressing persistent controversies surrounding bonuses, Pappoe also critiques the Black Stars' selection process, attributing recent struggles to coaching staff decisions. He underscores the coach's pivotal role in player selection, tactical choices, and strategic substitutions.
Pappoe urges the Ghana Football Association to assess the coach's performance and suitability for leading the team to the AFCON tournament in January and February 2024.
“It boils down to the manager in charge, from selecting the right players, choosing the right tactics, to putting in the right substitutions. If he, the coach, is still the right man for the job, the Ghana Football Association must sit down and assess his performance and see if he is the man to lead the team to the AFCON.”
As Ghana aims for an improved showing in the upcoming AFCON, Pappoe's recommendations highlight the importance of restructuring both bonus systems and coaching strategies for the success of the Black Stars.
