Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, believes the Ghana national football team have the potential to make a deep run—and possibly even win the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The four-time African champions will head into the tournament as one of the lower-ranked sides and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team, and Croatia national football team.
Despite recent struggles and the absence of a head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo, Adams remains optimistic about Ghana’s prospects.
“I will say that we are preparing. If I tell you that we are ready… we don’t even have a head coach,” he told Channel One TV.
“So it means that we are not fully ready yet. But I see us being ready by the time it’s time for us to play our first game against Panama.”
He added that while the current squad may lack the cohesion of previous generations, they still possess the quality to compete strongly on the global stage.
“This is a World Cup that I see us doing well. We should be hopeful. We may not have the best of players that we had in some time past, but we still have what it takes to go very far. Maybe possibly even win the World Cup,” he said.
The Ghana Football Association is expected to appoint a new head coach next week, with the team scheduled to regroup in May for a friendly against Mexico national football team before facing Wales national football team on June 2 in their final preparatory matches.
Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27, aiming to improve on recent group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022.
