Former head coach of Black Leopards, Maxwell Konadu has spoken about the differences he observed between the South African and Ghanaian football ecosystems.

Konadu, who has managed across various levels of Ghanaian football and more recently ventured into the South African league stated that the disparity in infrastructure is obvious. While South Africa boasts polished systems and better resourced clubs even in its second-tier leagues.

His perspective resonates with a wider discussion around African talent exports, where Ghana continues to produce players who make their mark across Europe, especially in the elite leagues despite the odds.

“A South African player grows up having almost everything a European player does,” Konadu began. “From a young age, they have access to good pitches, quality equipment, structured youth academies, and financial stability. So, the hunger and drive to move abroad aren’t as intense.”

“Talent and mentality can take you far, but imagine what we could do if our players had access to even half the facilities available in South Africa. Ghanaian football would be unstoppable.”

Yet, despite the gap in resources, Konadu believes Ghanaian players possess a priceless talent, coupled with their robust mindset.

According to Konadu, that raw ambition, born from a place of struggle, often makes Ghanaian footballers more determined and adaptable when they finally get their break.

“One thing is certain: the Ghanaian mentality. We have a stronger mindset than South African players. Our boys grow up having to fight for every opportunity. They’re hungry, they’re resilient. That desperation to make it out and succeed — especially abroad — drives them to work harder.”

The experienced tactician went ahead to make a passionate call to all stakeholders — to invest, to build world class infrastructure, and to provide the next generation of players the tools they need to aspire to their ambitions with opportunity.
