GFA Referees Manager Alex Kotey has warned match officials that poor performances will not be tolerated, saying those who fail to improve could be removed.

Speaking on the GFA Podcast, Kotey addressed growing concerns over officiating in the Ghana Premier League, where disputed penalties and controversial goal decisions have sparked debate this season.

He said the association has already put systems in place to raise standards but admitted progress has been gradual.

“We've put a lot of structures in place, and we are trying to plug some of them out, but it's been quite slow because we need to be very tactful in doing that,” Kotey said.

Kotey revealed that some referees have already faced sanctions for below-par displays.

“We have placed a lot of referees on ice for errors. Where you see a referee who is not in a position to be developed, you kick the person out,” he added.

Several high-profile incidents have kept refereeing standards in the spotlight. One of the most debated moments came during a clash between Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars at Dun's Park, where referee Julian Nunoo disallowed a Kotoko goal.

Officials of Hearts of Oak have also complained about decisions they believe affect the fairness of the competition.

Kotey, however, insists the GFA remains committed to protecting the integrity of the league by improving the quality and consistency of officiating.
