Former Ghanaian international, Lee Addy has urged the current Black Stars technical team to give the local players invited for the 2023 AFCON the opportunity as he strongly believes they will represent the Ghana Premier League very well when they are given the nod.
Richmond Lamptey of Asante Kotoko and Medeama SC duo of Jonathan Sowah and Abdul Fatawu Hamidu, are the three home-based players that have been selected for the tournament.
Just as himself in 2009, Lee Addy earned his first senior invite when he was a local players, and was with Berekum Chelsea. He made an instant impact in the team having featured for Ghana in both the 2010 AFCON and World Cup in Angola and South Africa respectively.
With this, he is very optimistic and confident that, if these local guys are given the opportunity too, they will also flourish and send out a good image of our local league to Africa and the world at large.
Also, he urged them to work extra harder and stay focused since he believes that will help them fare well with the Black Stars.
"Because I remember when I was playing in the local side, I was voted the best player two times and everybody knows that I could make it but when I got there, I got to know that it is a different ball game altogether.
“You have to work extra hard, you have to be focused and you are meeting with foreign players and you representing the local guys, everybody is counting on you.
“You have to do everything possible to stay there and if you are able to stay there then that means that the local league is also doing well.
“I think they have to give them chance, there are a couple of players who are doing well and I believe they deserve a chance.
“If they are given the chance I believe they will do well.” Lee Addy told Radio Gold Sports.
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations will commence on January 13, 2024 in Cote D'Ivoire.
Ghana are in Group B alongside Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique.
