A member of the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, Frederick Acheampong, has revealed that the decision to sack Black Stars head coach Otto Addo was made after the team’s heavy defeat to Austria.
Ghana were beaten 5-1 by Austria at the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna during their first friendly of the March international window, as part of preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
They later lost 2-1 to Germany in Stuttgart, after which the FA confirmed that Addo had parted ways with the national team.
However, Acheampong says the decision had already been taken before that second match.
“Irrespective of the outcome of the Germany match, Otto Addo was going to be sacked,” he told Kessben FM.
“The decision was formulated after the Austria match; we were just buying time,” he added.
Despite guiding Ghana to qualification for the World Cup, Addo’s time in charge was marked by inconsistency, especially against stronger teams.
The Black Stars are expected to regroup in May for friendly matches against Mexico on 22 May and Wales on 2 June.
