Ghana international defender Alidu Seidu has expressed immense pride and gratitude after playing a role in the Black Stars’ qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The Rennes defender, who returned to the national team setup after recovering from a long-term injury, was part of the squad that sealed Ghana’s qualification with a 1–0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium last Sunday. A second-half goal from Mohammed Kudus secured the crucial win that sent Ghana top of Group I with 25 points from 10 matches, ensuring their fifth appearance at the global showpiece.
Seidu, reflecting on the journey and his contribution, described the qualification as a proud moment in his career.
“The road hasn't always been smooth, but I've always given my all for Ghana. Honoured to be part of this team heading to the 2026 World Cup,” Seidu posted on his official social media page.
The 24-year-old defender has been a consistent performer for the Black Stars since making his debut in 2022, earning praise for his fighting spirit, defensive awareness, and versatility. Despite injury setbacks that sidelined him for parts of the qualification campaign, his return brought renewed solidity and confidence to Ghana’s backline.
Ghana’s qualification marks a strong comeback following the disappointment of missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Under head coach Otto Addo, the team showed resilience, winning seven and drawing one of their eight matches during the qualifiers.
The Black Stars’ qualification means they will make their fifth World Cup appearance, having previously featured in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022. Their best performance came in South Africa 2010, when they reached the quarterfinals—becoming only the third African nation to achieve that feat.
The 2026 edition will be historic as it expands to 48 teams, with nine African nations earning automatic qualification spots.
Ghana will discover their group-stage opponents when the official draw takes place on December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
