Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akufo Dampare has assured Asante Kotoko that those responsible for the fatal stabbing of a fan during their Ghana Premier League match against Nsoatreman FC will face justice.
Following the tragic incident, Dampare, accompanied by senior police officials, met with Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee chairman, Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awua I, and head of sporting affairs, Kwasi Appiah.
The meeting was not part of the ongoing investigation into the killing of Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong but served to offer condolences and reaffirm the police’s commitment to ensuring justice.
Dr. Dampare also personally reached out to Frimpong’s family, promising a thorough investigation.
Three Suspects Arrested, Including Former Minister
Police have arrested three individuals in connection with the stabbing: former Employment and Labor Relations Minister Ignatius Baffour Awuah, Agyemang Duah Owusu, and Kyeremeh Joseph. Investigators discovered bloodstained clothing and a pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition at Owusu’s residence, raising concerns over escalating violence at football matches.
GFA Charges Ten Players Over On-Pitch Brawl
Kotoko’s 1-0 loss to Nsoatreman was marred by violence, including an on-field altercation involving players from both teams.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has charged ten players for their roles in the brawl. Among them, Nsoatreman’s Stephen Diyou and Abdul Rahaman Mohammed, along with Kotoko’s Mohammed Camara and Justice Blay, face disciplinary action for unsporting behavior.
With the investigation ongoing, the tragic events in Nsoatre have sparked fresh concerns about security at football matches in Ghana.
